A MIDWINTER NIGHT’S TALE
Back on January 19th, 2001, Eric Argusa and Lawrence Gjurgevich, started Club Underground with DJs Dia Becker, Mark Wright and Jason Plucky Anchondo on the decks. We had the concept, the music and the energy all bundled up and ready to go and away we went. We really did not expect to do it more than once or twice as a monthly, since club land that many years ago was a completely different world than it is now (no FB, Twitter, Instagram etc). So we showed up on a drizzly January evening in L.A., and were shocked that anyone else other than us made the trek to Adams Blvd. that night. Fact is tons of others turned up that night. Not bad for word of mouth and paper flyers.
By the next morning, we were hijacked up by the owners of the Tempest, who basically forced us to move there and start a weekly event. They saw something in us that we were too naive to see at the time and for that, we are very grateful.
We really, really love what we are doing and are very fortunate that others kind of like it too. From Fais Do-Do (our 1st night) to the wonderful Tempest (years 1-6 / R.I.P.) and then The Echo where DJs Diana Barraza & Clifton Weaver joined Lawrence Gjurgevich to help hold down court every Friday on the dancefloor and on the patio, Underground is still pushing forward. Now Underground is at the legendary, Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown (DTLA) with its incredible history, charm, and light up dance floor! THe vibe at The Grand Star resembles the packed floor of Tempest. Squeezed in like sardines, elbows held tight as to not hurt anyone within striking distance.
Now with thousands of Underground events under our belts and countless memories, we have even more great bands, ticket/merchandise giveaways, exclusives, theme parties, great djs and special events lined up.
The most important part of all of this (and we wish more promoters would realize this) is YOU. Without support from you and your willingness to see what we have to offer, we would not be here. It really is that simple. We can’t thank you enough for all the love and support you have given us through the years. We do hope that you have had fun. We look forward to seeing you on the dance floor and creating more fond memories.
